The Gigerdi Mk.II Medium Cruiser was designed several years before the start of the Peace Station Project in year 3320. The Gigerdi Mk.II was designed as a replacement for the aging and constantly modified Gigerdi Mk.I Light Cruisers. The main advancements in the Mk.II included a brand new version of the subspace drive, which quickly replaced the older jump drives of the earlier models. The armaments of the vessel were also upgraded, and in the newer models of the vessel an Interceptor Grid was installed during the last few years of the Timocracy War. The Mk.II also carried a standard compliment of fighters to support it.
Despite earlier predictions, the Gigerdi Mk.II never reached as popular or numerous of a status as the Mk.I had among the ranks of the Gigerdi Federation's fleets. It was a good enough of a vessel for patrols and combat against larger starships, but as the Gigerdians learned during the Timocracy War, it had trouble engaging the smaller quick strike craft.
Additionally the interior of the Mk.II cruisers were also improved significantly from the somewhat Spartan conditions of the original cruisers. A small lounge Bar, Holodeck and a small indoors swimming pool were constructed inside each vessel in order to improve the service conditions of the crew. Naturally all of these advancements were in a miniature scale fitting for military vessels, but still many Gigerdians liked these improvements over the service conditions in the older vessels. After the Timocracy War some of the remaining Mk.II's were transferred to the mix and match units of the GACDF, and the rest were sold as civilian luxury liners.
Also, the Gigerdi Confederation received some of these Mk.II's during the Secession War (and immediately afterwards), and continued to use them throughout its' short existence. The number of Mk.II's in the Confederal side of the Gigerdians wasn't high, however, but they still provided a much needed punch for their greatly diverse fleets.
