Ion cannons are specialized versions of laser cannons. They penetrate energy shields, making them valuable weapons against heavily shielded vessels. Ion cannon blasts consist of high-energy ionized particles which disable electronic systems without causing physical damage. Ion cannons disable enemy ships so they can be captured intact.
