These ships are not manufactured anymore, but were popular during the late Second Age - early Third Age in United Orcs space. They were huge cube-shaped metal objects packed with computers, able to store and process vast amounts of information; this type of "dataship" was commonly used among other things as a subspace relay, as well as a mobile computer facility for distant colony worlds that lacked advanced supercomputer technology.
The Ion Storm hulls were popular among all kinds of space-farers because of their modular design and mutability - with the computer equipment removed, they were basically nothing but a giant empty pressurized box with ion thrusters. This allowed the empty hulls to be used for various purposes such as deep space colonies, science facilities and orbital space stations.
Pertti of the Clan Berserk was known to hijack entire Ion Storm class ships for his own purposes. It is likely that parts of the Berserk Station in orbit of Aldaain came from one of these lost Ion Storm class vessels.
