Active galactic nucleus
From Peace Station Encyclopedia
Jump to navigationJump to searchAn active galactic nucleus (AGN) is a compact region at the center of a galaxy that emits a large amount of energy across the electromagnetic spectrum. This energy is not produced by the galaxy's stars, but rather by a supermassive black hole actively accreting matter. The process of matter falling into the black hole releases enormous amounts of energy, making AGNs the most luminous persistent sources of radiation in the universe.
