Apples
The apple (Malus domestica of the Rosaceae family) is a medium-sized deciduous tree with multiple branches and its pomaceous fruit, also called an apple, is the better known and used ingredient. The tree exhibits a broad, dense, twiggy crown with alternately arranged simple oval leaves. The leaves have acute tips, serrated margins and somewhat downy undersides.
Fruit
Hanging from its branches are small, reddish pomaceous fruits containing five carpels arranged in a five-point star, with each carpel containing one to three seeds. The fruit often matures in autumn on Earth, and is typically 5-9 cm diameter.
Occurrence
Because the tree grows readily under a broad variety of conditions, Humans brought these plants with them when they set out amongst the stars; they have thrived under alien suns. Today apples are known to be grown around the galaxy, so times of harvest may differ from the original months of harvest on Earth.
Cultural significance
Apples have been present in the mythology and religions of many Human cultures, including the ancient Norse, Greek, Christian, and Jobsian traditions.
