The Atwar Shield class destroyer was designed by the Gigerdi Federation in 3280. The ship was meant to act as a support and patrol vessel for larger battles as in support of larger fighter swarms or capital ships and in peace time it would be primarily used to patrol systems and borders on a very local level. The Atwar Shield was never in very large production, but several dozens were built and were often deployed as support ships for larger gatherings of capital ships going into combat. The Atwar Shield was largely then moved as back-up units for colonial forces of the GF.
The most common role for these vessels was often to act as a shield for the larger capital ships and to destroy incoming weapons aimed towards the capital ships and fighter escorts. The Atwar Shield often carried a small contingent of fighters themselves, but weren't that often in full strength in terms of fighter squadrons inside it.
