Electron volt

A common unit of energy used in nuclear and particle physics. An electron gets the energy of one electron volt when it drops through a difference of one volt in voltage. MeV = a million electron volts (mega), GeV = a billion electron volts (giga), and TeV = a trillion electron volts (tera).

The masses of particles are also often indicated in electron volts. In this case the equation E = mc2 is used, where c has been selected as 1, since c is a constant.
