Escape velocity

Jump to navigationJump to searchEscape velocity is the velocity required to escape the gravity well of an object. A standard planet has an escape velocity of about 11 km/s, which means that you need to travel faster than 11 km/s to break free from it. A black hole has an escape velocity of more than 300 000 km/s, which makes it impossible to escape, even for light.
