Helix Nebula
From Peace Station Encyclopedia
Jump to navigationJump to searchA planetary nebula, the Helix Nebula used to be a typical main sequence star. As it died, it sloughed off its outer layers.
The dead star at the heart of the nebula is surronded by a dusty disc of icy material. This material probably originates from the former star system's comets, colliding with each other in the aftermath of the destruction.
The nebula is likely to disappear within the next 10,000 years. The colorful clouds will fade, and all that will remain is a white dwarf slowly cooling to the ambient temperature of the Universe.
The entire nebula structure is 3 light years across.
