The rank of Lieutenant is a rank above 2nd Lieutenant and below Lieutenant-Commander in the GA Military. The rank of Lieutenant is the second highest of the so-called "commanding officer ranks". The holders of this rank are usually in command of a larger entity of personnel serving under them than i.e. 2nd Lieutenant's do. Lieutenants can also serve as specialists of a certain field - such as medical personnel, and are a common sight in the bridge crews of a vessel, too.

In the ground forces a Lieutenant usually commands a platoon, or sometimes a company or a battery-sized element of either security forces or Clone Infantry along with other ground troops.

Lieutenants are, however, almost always considered too junior in regards to their training and experience in order to act as fleet vessel commanders or even as second-in-command.
