Neon is a rare gaseous element present in some planetary atmospheres. It is obtained by liquefaction of the atmosphere and separated from the other gases by fractional distillation. Neon functions in glowing signs, high-voltage indicators, lightning arrestors and wave meter tubes. Neon and helium are also used in making gas lasers, and some have used liquid neon as a cryogenic refrigerant.
