Nukem class cruisers were the proposed new generation of heavy cruisers in the IHSF. While they could not replace the older Aikons as the fleet standard due to their slow maneuverability, they were generally considered effective "heavy hitters" for subfleets. Many were used for defensive purposes such as colonial garrison fleets.

The design was later improved in the Nukem Mk.II class heavy cruiser.
