Ollekkoirpellu Giigerd
Fleet admiral Ollekkoirpellu Giigerd was a Gigerdian admiral from the Gigerdi Federation during the time of the HemmoCruiser Incident. He was in command of the first task force of ships sent into intercept the unknown vessel approaching Gigerdian space, which was later identified as the HemmoCruiser III.
Giigerd was always a person who saw the Gigerdian Federation as a state which needed to be forever vigilant towards possible invaders who could attack the federal state at a moment's notice and without warning. He had grown up in the aftermath of the H'Vos War and had witnessed the almost total destruction of his colony world in the hands of the H'Vos, and thus as he joined the federal military forces at a young age. He firmly believed that suspicious species suddenly appearing into the Gigerdian sphere of galactic influence should be dealt with accordingly if they showed any sign of planning sneak attacks or covert operations. Giigerd believed that the chances of the federal state ever being the subject of a disastrous sneak attack as with the H'Vos would be too great to bear, and thus should be foreseen if at all possible.
HemmoCruiser Incident
On 3352(?) the Gigerdian forward subspace listening posts relayed strange and exotic signals back to several Gigerdi Federation outposts suddenly and without warning. The signals came through as apparent communication, but with no resemblance to any known species. The Gigerdi Federation military was curious of a possible first contact with a new race, but nevertheless decided to deploy several vessels close to the Gigerdian border zones which had been identified as the possible source of the signals.
The subsequent subspace radar scans and intelligence gathering flights had shown that a massive unknown vessel of unknown configuration was the apparent source of the strange transmissions. What made matters worse for the Gigerdians was that it was shortly discovered that the large unknown vessel had apparently been engaged in firefights with unknown vessels of yet again unknown signature. The large vessel was also clearly armed and approaching the border with its weapons primed, which then sent the Gigerdians into full alert.
Fleet admiral Giigerd, aged 93 at the time, was the first high-ranking military officer who had received word of the transmissions and the nature of the source of the transmissions through the intelligence officials. Before this incident the first contacts with unknown species such as the Humans had been peaceful, open and not very suspicious to begin with. This could not be said about the current situation, which clearly showed that there was an immense and heavily-armed vessel attempting to pass or possibly attack Gigerdian colonies in the Alpha Quadrant. All of this seemed to make very much sense to Giigerd, since he read all of the battle data and military history from the H'Vos War, which was also a war started by a strange force without any warning. This time, however, the military strategic command had received word of a possible and upcoming attack.
Fleet admiral Giigerd was quickly scrambled with a battle group of ships along with his own personal command carrier, the GFS Geeroi Nemel. The rest of the three vessels of the scrambled task force were from a battle group on routine patrol closest to the intended location of the first contact.
The encounter begins
Admiral Giigerd had been teamed up with an additional battlegroup of vessels, which were led by a female Gigerdian captain by the name of Nooper Doniurs. Admiral Giigerd was informed by Doniurs that the circumstances and the intelligence reports regarding the unidentified vessel were uncertain and highly skeptical at best, so under any circumstances the Gigerdian taskforce should not go in guns blazing.
Giigerd disregarded the theories of the captain and was very certain that yet another violent first contact with an aggressive species would be at hand, but naturally as history has showed the real aggressors were not the owners of the massive ark, but rather the race pursuing them aggressively across several quadrants of space.
The Gigerdian task-force jumped into the Reykah system, which is a border system owned by the Gigerdian Federation in the Alpha Quadrant. Admiral Giigerd was informed that they had some time to prepare before the vessel would pass by the system. Giigerd ordered several groups of fighters to conduct reconnaissance-in-force operations in the supposed direction of the unidentified vessels.
The very first Gigerdian craft to discover the HemmoCruiser situation were patrolling fighter craft, which transmitted yet again very disturbing images back to battle command aboard the GFS Geeroi Nemel and to the admiral himself. It seemed that the large craft had sustained some damage and was mounting weapons of its own. The Gigerdian craft attempted to open communication channels and communicate with the large bulky craft, but received no answer.
Admiral Giigerd had no diplomatic teams, xenolinguistic translators or ambassadors with them, since the first contact situation was regarded as a potential threat primarily due to the circumstances and the vessels selected for first contact were military ships without any specialized diplomatic staff aboard them.
The capital ships of the Gigerdian armada were slowly advancing towards the large bulky vessel while attempting to communicate. Finally the large bulky ship did send several transmissions back to the Gigerdian vessels, but since the language of the transmissions were completely alien to the Gigerdians it was very hard to translate the transmissions. Admiral Giigerd ordered the Gigerdian fighters to begin swarming the large vessel so that it could not move and would halt its speed so that it could be boarded and possibly be hauled out of the system somehow.
Suddenly the HemmoCruiser had to maneuver itself so that a few of the Gigerdian fighters were pulled farther away from the hull to avoid collision course, but the desperate pace of the communications originating from the large alien vessel towards the Gigerdian vessels did not stop. Captain Doniurs immediately attempted to translate and decode the transmissions through several different mediums, but the process was not easy since the alien communications were difficult to decrypt and decode back into understandable Gigerdian language.
Turning point
Admiral Giigerd got into a heated argument over the real agendas of the aliens with Captain Doniurs to the point that their chain of command in a confusing and possibly volatile situation became an issue. Admiral Giigerd ordered warning shots fired at the strange vessel, which suddenly started to move again, first with just the fighter craft and then to proceed further with capital ship fire.
After the warning shots the Gigerdian forces were thrown into disarray when the HemmoCruiser finally managed to send understandable messages to the Gigerdian ships, but in the mind of admiral Giigerd the situation opened up as as case of the unknown aliens just stalling for time in order for their main attack fleets to arrive. According to Giigerd the aliens had been stalling with clever tactics and even attempted to overthrow the Gigerdian vessels and their communication equipment.
Giigerd then ordered more shots to be fired against the HemmoCruiser, however, Doniurs refused to compile with the order and caused other ship commanders also to disobey the admiral's orders. This caused some of the fighter squadrons to fire on each other and threw the fleet into even greater disarray. Giigerd was obviously enraged by this mutiny and ordered all ships to obey his orders and threatened the crews with court-martial if they would not obey.
The hostile situation became even more serious when several ships of yet again unknown configuration jumped into the system and quickly moved towards the gathering of Gigerdian vessels along with the large bulky alien vessel. The two Gigerdian commanders were in great disagreement of the fate of the alien vessel, but were suddenly surprised with the appearance of yet more aliens.
Fleet admiral Giigerd understood quickly that the aliens that had arrived were not the same aliens who they were dealing with currently. He did not rule out the possibility that the newcomers were a part of the plan, and thus ordered all of the Gigerdian vessels to destroy the HemmoCruiser and then pull back to regroup against the newer alien forces. Captain Doniurs responded that the situation was far too messed up for weapons to be used regardless of the supposed threat.
The other ship commanders were confused of the whole situation and especially on the passive HemmoCruiser which didn't respond with weapons fire. Other fighter squadrons continued their attacks on the HemmoCruisers while others tried to stop the attacks. Other ship commanders joined in the argument on whether or not to attack the HemmoCruiser and eventually started to support Doniurs on her opinion that they should cease their attacks and rather provide assistance to the HemmoCruiser.
Giigerd was furious that so many of the ships commanders disobey his orders and reminded them of the chain of command and also again threatened them with court-martial if they wouldn't obey. As the situation got more and more perilous and it started to become clear that Giigerd's method was not wise, all the fleet commanders eventually chose to cease fire. This was further reinforced by the additional messages sent by the HemmoCruiser. As Giigerd continued to order attacks against the HemmoCruiser and personally led his ship against the cruiser the other commanders advised the admiral to stand down.
At this point it became clear to first officer Zarren Verol that Giigerd was no longer fit to command the ship and was pursuing his own emotional agenda with no regards to the safety of the ship. By the Gigerdi Federation starfleet rule 293 he removed the admiral from command because his orders placed the ship in unnecessary risk. Giigerd was then escorted off the bridge.
After contact
Fleet admiral Giigerd has never been willing to admit that he had been highly paranoid in the situation and given his personal history it was decided to reform first contact protocols with races in regards to the HemmoCruiser Incident if something similar would happen again.
Although he was reprimanded by his behavior during the first contact he was still able to keep his rank, though it was ordered that he was not allowed to command in first contact situations anymore. Currently he is still working as an admiral in the Gigerdi Federation military, but has moved from commanding ships to a desk job on Gigerdi Prime and being one of the admirals responsible for the planning of the Federation fleet positions.
