Painapples

Painapples are a type of short, herbaceous perennial fruit tree with 30 or more trough-shaped and pointed leaves 30–100 cm long, surrounding a thick stem. The oval to cylindrical-shaped, compound fruit develops from many small fruits fused together. They are both juicy and fleshy with the stem serving as the fibrous core, but their tough exoskeleton is lined with sharp spikes, and they are slightly poisonous.

These factors make them incredibly painful to eat, which is why they gained a reputation of being a fruit with "warrior's spirit" in them back on their native world of Orceron. In primitive Orcish cultures, new warriors would sometimes be initiated by the clan by forcing them to eat painapples, and the fruit were also occasionally used as close combat weapons. A painapple to the head is no laughing matter.

The species eventually survived the Great Cataclysm of Orceron, but has not reached wide popularity among the peoples of the Milky Way.
