Namgron just brought this to my attention, apparently there's a new B5 movie coming out next month. I'm kinda torn about this one, on one hand: B5, awesome. on the other: the trailer makes it look like another River of Souls rehash. links:

The city that briefly features is apparently the Babylon 5 universe New York City, which explains the flying yellow cab. pretty neat.

I really hope jms's descent into mediocrity ends here, if not, b5 is pretty dead.

Saw it too.

Yeah, I watched the trailer a while ago, too. Don't really know what to say about the quality of that flick yet - especially when remembering the last flop (Legend of Rangers). I think that what M. Nykänen said once applies to Lost Tales: "Se on ihan fifty-sixty että miten käy".

A few points, though: the taxi featured in that clip reminds me of.. Goddamn it, Bruce Willis. Remember Fifth Element ? Bruce Willis was a grungy futuristic cab driver in that movie, and I'm willing to bet my left nut that the cab in the trailer somehow escaped from it. I definitely remember that Fifth Element had cabs like that and all. And as a FYI, Die Hard 4 is apparently in the theaters now.

As for Earth Force One - well, I do remember that particular shot from some promo material years ago. So the picture ain't exactly brand new. I'm hoping that the movie would feature a hell of alot more of all that interesting political gambling instead of the usual pseudo-religious technomage-babble.

I've always been pretty skeptical about the B5-movies. I mean, the only _really_ good ones were Call to Arms and some parts of Thirdspace. In the Beginning and Legend of The Rangers sucked real bad. I bet that Lost Tales has all the potential to be a pretty bad one, judging from the earlier releases. Here's to hoping something else, though.

I feel safe in new york city

It's true, they do look alike. But then, flying cars? It's a sci-fi cliche that goes back to Metropolis. Not that that makes it any better, just that Fifth Element was hardly the first one to have them ... Also, the dude who's driving the cab drives like me. You'd think there'd be some sort of traffic regulations for flying cars in the future instead of just having them fly at buildings at high speeds ... I guess New York City in the future got over their whole "flying things hitting buildings" trauma.

As for Earth Force One - well, I do remember that particular shot from some promo material years ago.

It does seem kind of out of place, nothing in the trailer explicitly hints at earthgov business. But it's there anyway so who knows.

... alot more of all that interesting political gambling instead of the usual pseudo-religious technomage-babble.

Amen, this is exactly what Babylon 5 needs. That's what made the whole show work. The Shadows, blah blah, yeah, that was good in the background as a motivator but the foreground was all about politics. Fucking mages and dudes with glowing eyes is not it.

In the Beginning and Legend of The Rangers sucked real bad.

Both had amazing potential but they screwed them up with half-assed production. In the Beginning had actual continuity errors and the lotr writing was just awful. The effects get progressively neater though.

I bet that Lost Tales has all the potential to be a pretty bad one ...

Unfortunately, yeah. The plot basically looks like it's about a supervillain on the station, that's not exactly a fresh concept. there does appear to be a secondary storyline however, and I hope to God it's not about Sheridan visiting the holographic brothels with Galen, while Lochley solves the situation with grenades. Goddamn River of Souls.

According to rumor "if this one gets off" then we'll have some more flicks, and they'll finally show us whatever happened to mr. Garibaldi. I dunno, maybe they should've started with Garibaldi because now if this doesn't work, we _still_ don't get to know his fate .. and also because a movie about Garibaldi kicking ass and taking names in a classic vendetta movie set in a sci-fi world would be so much better than mages and glowing dudes.
