The asymptotic giant branch (AGB) is a late stage in the life cycle of stars with moderate masses (roughly 0.5 to 8 times the standard mass). These stars have exhausted the hydrogen fuel in their cores and are now fusing hydrogen into helium in a shell surrounding a degenerate carbon-oxygen core. The AGB phase is characterized by significant mass loss and thermal pulsations.
