CompuTec, a sub-division of the SMOY Corporation, is one of the most well-known information technology providers in the Hemmoian Federation, involved in software development as well as the manufacture of computer hardware.

Controversies

During the Third Age, CompuTec became known for their somewhat lax standards in quality assurance, or as some might put it, the complete lack of all standards whatsoever. Several incidents were caused by malfunctions of CompuTec software in some critical infrastructural function, including the total loss of life on the Outer Rim colony world of RSA-374-2. The life support machinery of the colony promptly shut down after a 30-day "trial period" had expired and the proper "activation serial code" had not been entered by the colonial administrator, who was too busy choking to death. The system was later modified so that life support still remained functional after the 30-day period, but would only generate atmospheres that smell really bad.

Another well known accident involving CompuTec technology was the case of the P-class personal transporter, which occasionally experienced shifts in the gravity setting of the navigational computer. The computer would, for no readily apparent reason, assume an increase in gravity 300 times the norm, firing all MGD engines simultaneously at full power and sending the hovercraft on a rapid ascending trajectory.
