The Prime class heavy cruiser was designed by the Gigerdi Federation in the year 3315 as a battle ship.
It was the most heavily armed cruiser at that time and was designed solely against enemy capital ships and thus had rather poor maneuverability. However, the added missile tubes provided a good cover against fighters as well without the need of support ships.
It was used during the short-lived Folan war as well as during the Bacterian conflict. While both conflicts proved its effectiveness against enemy capital ships it did have harder times against enemy carriers and their fighters without any smaller support ships. Fortunately the Commander class light cruisers had been designed to eliminate this liability.
Although the Prime class is rather old design it is still used actively today, though it has been significantly refitted over the years. Primes are often employed as defensive ships of the more important Gigerdian locations, but it can also be used as a patrol ship and has been used in that role effectively against pirates and raiders.
