The Planet Eater Array was an ultra-powerful transdimensional burst weapon based on the planet Xalan in the V3 War. The other end of the weapon was located aboard the massive V3 Flagship, protected by the V3 Doomsday Fleet.

Design

The device was based on the "reality storm" prototypes constructed by Master Professor Etor Kn'tewoc, but on a much larger, planetary scale. In a gruesome example of total war, the entire world of Xalan had been turned into a mechanism for the terrible weapon. Main generators for the dimensional burst weapon were located beneath the surface of Xalan, while energy focusers had been placed in orbit as satellites.

Although the Array could open a dimensional gateway on its end, it needed another set of focusers in the target system. To this end, the V3 Doomsday Fleet was constructed, consisting of a powerful Flagship and many support craft, capable of opening another dimensional gateway. All vessels in the fleet were equipped with advanced Cloaking Devices, rendering them invisible to scanners both in the long and immediate ranges.

Destruction of V'romo Prime

The Planet Eater Array was first fielded against V'romo Prime, effectively removing the entire planet from existence and collapsing the V'romo civilization.

Destruction of Xalan

The plan of the Doomsday Fleet was to hit the UO command world unseen, before any counterattack could be mounted. However, unknown to the V3, a UO Covert Task Force was able to infiltrate the Flagship, posing as a maintenance crew.

With the Flagship destroyed, the Dimensional Gateway collapsed, but the burst of energy had already been sent from Xalan through the conduit. This caused a massive feedback burst of disruptive energy to emerge from the Xalan Gateway, overloading the generators and orbital focusers and resulting in the destruction of the entire world. In essence, the V3 Alliance had erased itself from existance.

Although Aldaain was saved, the high-energy transdimensional event caused a cascading failure of subspace communications relays in the thousands of star systems within the UO sphere of influence. Colonies were left in the dark, not knowing whether Aldaain had been destroyed or not. This new dark age became known as the Great Chaos, as the UO splintered into hundreds of independent colonies and coalitions.
